Are you starting a wedding planner business?
If so, that’s great! Welcome to the wonderful world of weddings!
Starting a wedding planner business can be a little daunting and overwhelming for some and so, in this article, I’m going to break down my top tips for starting a wedding planning business.
Top Tip #1 – Don’t Overthink Things
When you’re first starting a wedding planner business, you might find it difficult to choose your wedding business name or set your prices.
The best way to overcome this is to commit to making quick decisions. Yes, you don’t want to make mistakes, but it’s better than getting stuck on something from day one.
Top Tip #2 – Don’t Worry About What Other Wedding Planners Are Doing
This is an issue that I see all the time with people starting a wedding planner business. They focus on what others are doing instead of concentrating on what is right for them.
My wedding business coaching model is very different from everybody else. I inspire my clients to ignore their competition and create a wedding business that is designed around them.
If you look at what other wedding planners are doing – you will feel lost, scared, and completely overwhelmed with imposter syndrome.
Instead, take a little time to focus on your why. Why are you starting a wedding planner business?
Then, set out your money goals.
Once you know how much you want to make from your wedding business each year – everything else will fall into place.
Top Tip #3 – Get as Much Experience as You Can
When you’re just starting out, it can be incredibly daunting to plan a wedding from scratch. Especially if you don’t have any wedding planning experience.
That was me back when I started my wedding planning business in 2009. I was starting from scratch without any experience and with a very limited budget.
I couldn’t afford to take any wedding planning courses, so I decided to give away a wedding for free.
And so, I put the free giveaway post on a local classifieds website in my area offering to help plan a wedding for free.
I was very clear and open about my reasons for doing this and ended up getting a wedding at one of the top wedding venues in my city.
The experience I got from this free wedding was all I needed.
I gained so much knowledge and understanding from this free wedding and was able to use it to move forward with confidence and of course, a real wedding for my portfolio.
Top Tip #4 – Set Your Prices Before You Create Your Brand
The biggest mistake you can make when you’re starting a wedding planner business or any other wedding company is to create your brand design before setting your prices.
Your wedding packages and prices dictate everything in your business.
If you’re pricing for your wedding packages or products is high, you will need to create a brand that aligns with that high-end level.
This means that your tone, your voice, your look, your feel, and every tool you use need to be the best of the best.
You won’t be able to charge high prices for your wedding planner services if your brand looks like a DIY wedding brand.
Wedding Planning can be a highly profitable business, but only if you set the right prices.
If you like freebies, I have an awesome free template called the wedding packages and pricing template that you can customize to suit your wedding planning company >>> Download it Now!

Top Tip #5 – Commit Your First Year
If you want to grow your wedding planner business and have a solid foundation, you will as many wedding bookings as you can in your first year.
Bridal couples need to know they can rely on you and trust that you will deliver on your promises.
One of the ways they research if you’re wedding planning company is good enough for their wedding is with your portfolio and your testimonials.
I recommend working as much as you can in your first year to build up your portfolio and collect as many testimonials as you can.
This will give you more freedom in the following years giving you ample opportunity to work to your schedule.
In other words, if you only want to work at 12 weddings a year – you can!
Starting a Wedding Planner Business With No Experience
If you’re starting your wedding planning business with little or no experience, you might find it beneficial to sign up for a wedding planning course first.
The Wedding Academy offers some awesome online wedding planning courses at reasonable prices.
If you’re on a budget, you could take a look at Udemy or ShareASkill.
